Random Updates

Hmmmm, let's see........ (I am editing a draft post from weeks ago so I hope this makes sense)

MAJOR storms recently. Luckily, not too much wind though. A TON of rain. Flooded basement. I am SO glad we bought a large wet/dry shop vac on Black Friday. After all its use last night, I can now say fighting the crowds that morning was worth it. And thanks Teresa for going to Lowe's to pick it up while I was in Target ;) Bryan had a pump in his work van that helped, too. Oh, and our tarp McGuyver skills....ha ha. Not many tree branches down, only a few minor ones. My container gardens took a hail of a beating though. I hope everything recovers. Brayden found a bird nest in the yard the day after.

Baseball is all done, it was a short, rainy season. The kids got trophies, and Rylan got a metal.

Brayden is doing VERY WELL swimming. Last month, we had an away meet at an outdoor pool. It was so fun! And, Brayden took FIRST PLACE in his events! After his previous meet, he aspired to "not be second again". His drive is amazing. He never wants to skip practice. He went 5 days per week, although he's only asked to attend 2. In addition, he likes to do open swim on weekends. Last Saturday, we had Summer Swim Championships at Cal U. He won 3 metals, and had a great time! We have one more meet on Thursday, a short meet. We won't continue with swim team in the fall, but plan to have both boys on the team next summer. Speaking of fall- after some discussions, we are leaning toward joining ONLY a developmental hockey team instead of a competitive team at Allegheny or Westmoreland. First, its MUCH less expensive, and it will free up time for the kids to pursue other sports they want to try: Brayden wants to do football in the fall, and track in the spring. Rylan wants to play basketball this winter. These weren't possible with competitive ice hockey. We still plan to attend "Stick Time" during the week to keep up the hockey skills, and the developmental team.

We still have to decide on other fall sports. There is a local fall baseball program, flag football though the Y, hopefully Hot Shots home school gym program, and Stage Right home school musical again. We can't do it all, so we need to call some contacts and find out days/times etc.

I have started a running training program. Why? Well, why not? I have NEVER been a runner. Ever. Even in high school, when we had to run a mile, I walked and chatted with friends. I can hike mountains, bike, swim, and take group exercise classes at the Y but running is a challenge. It's SO different from my other activities. Its been surprisingly fun (besides the first day). Its nice to have a friend to run with (Thanks Becky!) and I am improving, and doing better than I expected. We are looking into upcoming 5K's this fall. I am not sure what I will do in the winters though. Treadmills are SO boring!

We are looking forward to drier weather for camping. Oh, and biking. I can't wait to take the kids out on the bike trail. We are hoping to get together with Jessica in a week or two, so that will be fun.

Other news? I stained my hair with henna. I like it. Oh, and I attended a very nice, informative herb class....I look forward to more classes offered. I am already making some new herb tinctures.

So, that's about it. Hopefully more pics and or video soon.

Brayden's First Swim Meet

Brayden had his first swim met last night.
WOW what a long night! We arrived at 4:30, and left at about 9:30. Rylan was VERY cooperative, and didn't complain at all. Rylan is excited to join Brayden next summer on the team. He was asked to join this year, but I didn't' think he was quite ready yet.

He did GREAT for his first ever meet. He had fun, and that was the most important thing. He went to sleep at about 11, and got up at 7, ready for swim practice again this morning. We also plan to go to open swim this Sunday to work on rotary breathing. He's very excited about an upcoming away meet at an outdoor pool.

Here are a couple clips of his events (Brayden is in the very far lane):

PPG Zoo and Aquarium

Over the weekend, we went to the PPG Zoo and Aquarium to check out the new Sand Tiger Shark exhibit. Rylan LOOOOVES sharks. He can correctly identify the names and some facts about 15 or so shark species. Brayden really loves anything to do with SCUBA divers and SCUBA diving. This was the perfect weekend for the boys- as the aquarium had both a special shark event, AND SCUBA divers to watch and talk to. We had a wonderful time there and decided to buy a family membership so we can go back again. I discovered route 130 will take me directly to the zoo, so I can drive the kids there myself without having to "drive in Pittsburgh".

I took hundreds of pictures, a lot of them are really neat. I don't have the time to load more here, but this is a link to view them all:
(for some reason I am unable to link the snapfish album to blogger at this time, I will try again later.)

Mammoth Family Fun Day

We attended the Annual Family Festival at Mammoth State Park last weekend. We had a great time. Mammoth park is beautiful, and it was a great, mild day.

Rylan LOVES sharks, Brayden loves a clean face ;)

They enjoyed riding with friends
And riding ON new friends

Both boys won a large stuffed animal by throwing darts

This was a neat photo from inside a tee pee

Rachel's 11th Birthday

Our neighbor girl turned 11! She had a really fun party at a local fire hall with a DJ and lots of dancing. The boys mostly played ball.

Brayden *thought* he looked cool with this hat style
No, he didn't get dance lesons from Uncle Jack, he was kicking a ball :)

Limbo!

Dancing
Soooo NOT dancing

Yes, we are still doing school

but a bit more relaxed for summer.

We don't plan to take an entire summer break. A few worksheets and books outside on blankets, practical cooking and money math, and some fun documentaries and youtube videos. Of course more focus on the natural sciences. Right now, the boys are deciding which local bird species they will focus on this spring and summer.

Here is a fun way to learn geography-a puzzle!

Poopy Girl

Our dogs are the cool kids of the neighborhood. The other dogs roam into our yard to hang out and do doggie stuff. Chloe is their best friend who lives next door. A beautiful Golden. Every morning at approximately 10 am, Chloe comes to our front porch and stares into our house until I open the door to let Rufus and Neena out to play. They wrestle and sniff, then come in to drink then nap. Repeat daily.

For some reason, Chloe loves to roll in poop. And for some reason, Neena thinks its ok to wrestle with a dog who is covered in stinky poop. Then SHE gets covered. SO gross.

This is her "punishment": A *BATH*!!!

Its farmers market season!

I LOVE growing season. Especially Farmer Paul Sarver's bounty. He has a wonder local organic farm. His produce is superb. His lettuce is Brayden's favorite food. :) Brayden and I left the house early this morning and headed to the farmers market. We bought spinach, two heads of lettuce and basil plants. Yes, I know basil is easy to grow. However, I began my herb garden seeds too early this year and it failed. I had lovely sprouts, but they were too long and fragile. Tomorrow we'll replant them into a large container on the back deck. After the market, Brayden rollerbladed and I jogged along with him around both tracks. We had a great morning together.

My helper for washing and storing, Rylan
He helped to wash the lettuce and spinach
And spin the excess water out

I was happy to use my new salad spinner I bought over the winter. Its XOXO brand, I love it!

Our final product of clean, stored spinach and lettuce!
I like to use the green produce bags...yes, they do work.
